A mobile court has seized seven excavators and a bulkhead used for illegally extracting sand from the Meghna River in Ashuganj Upazila of Brahmanbaria. A drive was conducted there on Wednesday afternoon under the leadership of Ashuganj Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Rafe Mohammad.
According to the mobile court sources, the upazila administration received a complaint of illegal sand extraction from the Meghna River adjacent to Durgapur Union using dredgers. Then in the afternoon, UNO Rafe Mohammad conducted a raid there. At that time, evidence of illegal sand extraction was found and seven dredgers and a bulkhead were seized.
The seized dredgers are Messrs. Abir Traders, Ababil Dredging Project, Shakib Sabbir Load Dredger, Atiba Adiba Load Dredger, Allah Sarbashkatiman Dredger, Gausia Load Dredger and Zon Shah Dredger. In addition, a bulkhead named ‘Zia and Sabbir Enterprise’ was also seized. These have been kept in the custody of Bhairab Naval Police Station. A team from Ashuganj Police Station and Bhairab Naval Police Station participated in the operation.
Rafe Mohammad said, “Illegal sand extraction from the Meghna River is very harmful to the environment and the natural flow of the river. Regular campaigns will be conducted against such activities.”
