A ship carrying raw materials of a ceramic company is sinking in the Meghna River in Bhola. The ship’s bottom burst after being hit by another ship in the river adjacent to Kachia Union in Sadar Upazila after 3 am on Saturday. It may completely sink by Sunday evening.
The ship’s name is MV Rexglory-1. The ship was going from Chittagong Port to Dhaka with ceramic raw materials. The ship’s employees said that the matter has been informed to the owner. They will send a rescue ship to unload the goods and make the ship safe. However, the officials concerned said that no government department is aware of this matter.
Some local fishermen and the ship’s helmsman Md. Shahidul Islam said that MV Rexglory-1, loaded with ceramic raw materials, set off for Dhaka from Chittagong Port. It anchored at Bhola’s Kachia Ghat on Friday night. After lifting anchor at around 3:30 am on Saturday and starting its journey towards Dhaka, another ship named ‘Sultana Bakkar’ coming from the opposite direction rammed it, causing the bottom of Rexglory to burst. Since then, the ship has been slowly sinking.
Thirteen crew members of the sinking ship took shelter at the Tulatuli fishing pier on the shore with the help of a local trawler. It is seen on the ground that the ship is still 2 to 3 feet away from sinking completely. There is a risk of it sinking completely by this evening.
Bhola River Port Deputy Director Md. Riyad Hossain said he was not informed about the matter. Bhola’s Ilisha River Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shahin said the same. He said that action will be taken after investigating the incident.
