ADB to assist Bangladesh in river cleaning projects: Environment Adviser

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will support Bangladesh in executing cost-effective river cleaning projects for major rivers like the Buriganga, Turag, and Balu, announced Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser. She also noted that ADB will aid in implementing the climate action plan, including the National Adaptation Plan.

After a meeting with ADB Country Director Edimon Ginting at the secretariat on Tuesday, Syeda Rizwana Hasan highlighted the importance of involving the private sector and youth in environmental protection initiatives. She also stressed the need for capacity building and requested ADB’s assistance in establishing a training institute for officials of the Department of Environment.

She expressed gratitude for ADB’s ongoing support for various environmental and climate-related projects in Bangladesh and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to enhance Bangladesh’s resilience to climate change and promote sustainable development.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan also underscored the need for innovative approaches and financing mechanisms to tackle these challenges effectively.

Edimon Ginting reaffirmed ADB’s commitment to helping Bangladesh achieve its environmental and climate objectives. He announced plans to support river cleaning efforts using AI technology and discussed future initiatives. Additionally, Edimon invited the environmental adviser to speak at the Climate Adaptation Investment Planning Forum, scheduled to be held at ADB headquarters in Manila, Philippines, from September 17 to 18 this year.
