On Friday, July 11, 2025, an environmental awareness campaign titled “Plastic-Free Bholaganj, Eco-Friendly Tourism” was organized at Bholaganj, one of Sylhet’s naturally scenic tourist spots. The event was jointly initiated by the Environment Club of Sylhet Agricultural University and the Department of Environment, Sylhet, with support from Surma River Keeper, Islamic Relief Bangladesh, Pathfinder International, and MissionGreen Bangladesh.
Activities under the campaign included the collection of plastic and other waste, awareness discussions with local tourists, distribution of tree saplings in exchange for plastic, and the establishment of dumping stations.
Participants included teachers and students at Sylhet Agricultural University, environmental activists, and residents.
Inaugurated by Professor Dr. Md. Alimul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of Sylhet Agricultural University, the discussion session was chaired by Professor Dr. Mohammad Samiul Ahsan Talukder of the Department of Agroforestry and Environmental Science.
In his speech, Dr. Alimul Islam stated said “Nature is our closest friend, yet due to irresponsible human actions, it is now under threat. Young people must take responsibility to protect natural spots like Bholaganj. Plastic pollution poses serious risks not only to the environment but also to public health and the economy.”
Officials from the Department of Environment stressed the need for proper waste management for sustainable tourism. Installing dumping stations and increasing public awareness are crucial for maintaining environmental balance in tourist areas.
Members of the Sylhet Agricultural University Environment Club emphasized the need for regular campaigns as part of an ongoing movement to build a plastic-free, green, and sustainable Bangladesh.
