Brazil has sunk an old aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Ocean, as confirmed by the Brazilian Navy. The vessel, built in the 1960s with a capacity to carry 40 fighter jets, was deliberately sunk despite warnings from environmentalists who cautioned that this action could pollute the ocean and disrupt the marine food chain.
According to a Reuters report, the warship was originally constructed in France and later sent to Turkey for decommissioning. However, Turkey refused entry due to environmental concerns, prompting its return to Brazil. The Brazilian Navy stated that the sinking was “planned and controlled,” taking place 350 kilometers off the northeastern coast in waters 5,000 meters deep, a location chosen to minimize any impact on fishing or ecosystems.
Greenpeace, the international environmental organization, urged Brazil not to proceed with scuttling the ship, highlighting the presence of various ‘contaminated’ materials onboard.
