A debate competition centered on the theme “Fossil fuels are not the solution; only renewable energy can combat climate change” was held at Taltoli Government College in Barguna on Saturday, May 17, at 11 a.m. The event was jointly organized by Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA) and Waterkeepers Bangladesh.
Eleventh-grade students of the college participated in the competition, forming proposition and opposition teams. The opposition team won the debate, with Fatima Akter, the team leader, being named Best Speaker.
Md. Abdur Rahman, Assistant Professor of Accounting, presided over the event. The judging panel included Nasir Uddin, Lecturer of Mathematics; Abdur Rahman from the Bengali Department; and Shirin from the Economics Department.
Opening remarks were delivered by Arif Rahman, Taltoli-Amtali Coordinator, and environmental activist M. Milon. Both emphasized the urgent need to address climate change, the significance of shifting to renewable energy, and the importance of raising environmental awareness among youth.
All participating students received books and a Bakul tree sapling as tokens of appreciation. The event was moderated by Md. A. Halim, Lecturer of History, with logistical support from the Rover Scouts team.
