Sylhet has received 26.6 millimeters of rain in the last 24 hours. Although the heavy rain has subsided somewhat, the mountain floods coming from India across the border have not stopped. As a result, the water level in the rivers is increasing. The water is flowing above the danger level at four points of the district’s two main rivers, Surma and Kushiyara.
Meanwhile, although no new areas were flooded, many villages and roads in the low-lying areas of five unions of Zakiganj Upazila in Sylhet are still flooded. The market in Zakiganj Upazila Sadar was flooded on Monday. The water has completely receded by Tuesday morning, the local administration said.
According to the Sylhet Water Development Board (PAUBO), water is flowing above the danger level at Kanaighat point on the Surma River in Sylhet and at Amalshid, Sheola and Fenchuganj points on the Kushiyara River as of 9 am on Tuesday. The water level at Kanaighat point was 13.69 meters, which is 0.94 meters above the danger level. At Amalshid point, it was 17.36 meters, which is 1.96 meters above the danger level. At Sheola point, it was 13.52 meters, which is 0.47 meters above the danger level. At Fenchuganj point, it was 9.98 meters, which is 0.53 meters above the danger level. The water level has increased compared to yesterday at all four points.
Apart from the Surma and Kushiyara rivers, the water levels of the Dhalai, Lova, Sari and Dauki rivers in the district have increased. Only the water levels of the Sari-Goain rivers have decreased slightly today compared to yesterday.
According to sources from the local administration and residents of the area, the water level in the rivers of Gowainghat, Companiganj, Fenchuganj, Kanaighat, Jaintapur and Osmaninagar upazilas of the district is rising. In Zakiganj upazila, the dam of the Kushiyara river has broken at several places, flooding various villages. Water has entered many houses. In addition, several rural roads have been submerged. In this situation, many people have become waterlogged. This has caused suffering to the flood-affected people.
Zakiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahbubur Rahman told Prothom Alo that it is not yet possible to determine exactly how many villages have been flooded and how many people are trapped in the water. However, the low-lying areas of five unions in the upazila have been flooded. A total of nine people from two families have taken shelter in two shelters among the residents of that area. All measures have been taken to deal with the situation.
Meanwhile, according to sources from the Sylhet Meteorological Department, 26.6 millimeters of rain was recorded in Sylhet from 6 am yesterday to 6 am today.
Deepak Ranjan Das, executive engineer of PAUBO Sylhet, told Prothom Alo, “Although the rain in Sylhet has gradually decreased, the mountain floods from India continue to come through the border rivers. Although the rain has decreased, the water is increasing. However, the rain is also decreasing in India. Apart from this, the water is also flowing rapidly downstream. Therefore, if there is no new rain, we think that the situation will return to normal in a day or two.”
