A human chain and demonstration were held in the Basila area of Mohammadpur, Dhaka, demanding the removal of the defective section of the walkway constructed beneath the Martyred Intellectuals Bridge. The protest took place on Friday, January 17, 2025, jointly organized by Dharitri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA) and local residents near the old primary school in Basila.
Speakers at the rally highlighted that the walkway is detrimental to the lives and livelihoods of people residing along the riverbanks and called for its immediate removal.
The event was presided over by Sharif Jamil, Member Secretary of DHORA, and moderated by Ibnul Said Rana, Chairman of the Nirapad Development Foundation (NDF). The chief guest at the protest was Dr. Mujibur Rahman Howladar, Advisor of DHORA and former Chairman of the National River Conservation Commission (NRCC).
Other notable speakers included Faisal Ahmed, Editor, River Bangla; Monir Hossain Chowdhury, Executive Director of ERDA; Mir Mohammad Ali, Assistant Professor at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University; and Ahsan Roni, Executive Director of Mission Green Bangladesh.
Representing the local community, speakers included Sagarika, Saiful Islam, Khateeb Enamul Haque of Basila Mosque, Kabir Hossain, Shahidul Islam, Imranul Haque Imon, Ranjit, Haji Nur Mohammad, and Mohammad Lal. Additionally, environmental activists, journalists, and residents of the Basila area also participated in the program.
