In a bid to enhance environmental conservation and promote clean air, the ‘Haore Sobujayon’ awareness program was launched on Saturday afternoon in the haor area of Muriauk Union, Lakhai Upazila, Habiganj district. Organized by Khowai River Waterkeeper and the local organization Haor Rokhhay Amra, the initiative encourages community members to engage in tree planting and conservation efforts.
The program featured Tofazzal Sohel, Khowai River Waterkeeper and convener of Haor Rokhhay Amra, as the chief guest. Sohel emphasized the social benefits of trees, highlighting their crucial role in maintaining a healthy environment for all living beings, including humans and animals.
The event, moderated by environmental organizer Bahar Uddin, included remarks from several notable figures, including retired headmaster Imdadul Islam Chowdhury, environmental activist Mohiuddin Ahmed Ripon, and drama activist Osmangani Rumi. Other speakers included Shahinur Rahman Molla, president of Upazila Sahitya Parishad, journalist Yakub, and community members Hasan Antar, Kamrul Hasan Sujan, Md. Habibur Rahman, Md. Wazed Bhuiyan, Md. Rakibul Hasan, Rifat Rahman, Rahmat Ali, and Md. Taj Uddin.
As part of the greening initiative, participants planted palm saplings, as well as a variety of fruit, forest, and medicinal plants along the Kalauk to Satauk road and Muriauk area. The program also distributed saplings to children, youth, and local social organizations to foster a sense of responsibility towards the environment.
The ‘Haore Sobujayon’ program aims not only to beautify the region but also to educate the community about the importance of tree planting in mitigating environmental challenges due to climate change, particularly in the vulnerable haor ecosystem.
