People living in Nesarabad upazila of Pirojpur district yesterday formed a human chain demanding steps to prevent erosion of the Sandha River, which has rendered hundreds of people homeless.
Organised by Endurhat river erosion prevention committee the human chain was formed on the west bank of the river. Hundreds of people including teachers, students, businessmen and former government high officials took part in the programme.
Local elites addressing the human chain demanded immediate government measures to prevent erosion of the river.
The meeting was addressed, among others, by former joint secretary Md Abul Kalam, teacher Montu Lal Karmaker, Md Abdur Rashid, Ranjan Majumder and Suvas Kumar Karmaker.
According to sources, erosion has taken a serious turn in the area forcing frequent relocation of Kaurikhara launch and ferry terminal. The river has recently devoured one hundred acres of land making hundreds of people homeless.
