Over 100 Netrokona villages flooded, thousands marooned

Continuous rain and water from upstream have caused new areas in Netrokona to be submerged, affecting over 100 villages in 20 unions across three upazilas.

More than 100,000 people have been stranded as homes, roads, and educational institutions in these areas remain underwater. Additionally, around 350 hectares of Aman paddy fields have been inundated, according to local sources.

With water entering homes, many residents have sought shelter in the homes of relatives, while some are residing on higher ground or on bridges along with their livestock and poultry.

The stranded population is now facing severe shortages of animal feed, baby food, and clean water.

The most affected areas include six unions in Durgapur upazila, seven in Kalmakanda, three in Purbadhala, and four in Barhatta, where all low-lying houses have been flooded.

On Sunday, the situation worsened as embankments in Jaria and Zanjail of Purbadhala and Durgapur upazilas were breached, leading to further flooding in new areas.

According to the Water Development Board (WDB), as of 6pm on Sunday, the water level in the Kangsa River at the Jaria point was flowing 15cm above the danger mark, while the Updakhali River at Kalmakanda was 5cm above the danger level. Water levels in the Someshwari and Dhanu rivers are also rising.

Deputy Commissioner Bonani Biswas visited various flood-hit areas in Durgapur and Kalmakanda, distributing 3 tons of rice and 300 packets of dry food to the affected people.
