The most portion of the road had been eroded due to the incessant rains and rolling of hilly waters from the upstream and due to erosion on the Kushiara river.
During a visit to the area, it was seen that a good portion of the road on Oloitoli-bhangabari area eroded almost totally while locals have to walk to reach the eroded part for availing vehicles on both ends. The sufferings for females, minors and elderly people have mounted.
A number of locals said the road went under water due to incessant rains and rolling of upstream water in August last year for days.
As the water receded after days, erosion on the adjacent Kushiyara river grabbed some of the riverbank area snapping the direct road link.
This is why villagers of Jalalpur, khanpur, alipur, Notun Koshba, Gotgaon, Sonatoka, Kodomtoli, Moshajan, Katia, Oloitoli, Alagdi, in Pailgaon and kalnichar, Atghar, Khalainjura, Milik and Borofechi etc in Asharkandi union fell in huge trouble as it’s their only way to link the upazila town as well as to communicate Sylhet, Dhaka and other places.
Some locals said the road link is suspended for the last 6 months, while the inhabitants of the unions had been suffering to a great extent.
Pailgaon Union chairman (acting) Nojmuddin said locals have to depend on foot for 500 to 600 feet on the important road.
The water Development Board (WDB) has been working on an alternative road, which may reduce the sufferings.
An official said that the locals would get the facility to walk as a crop protection embankment has been on at the area. Doing something permanent would take time.
