River Talkies-7: “Health Impacts of River Pollution’’

Waterkeepers Bangladesh (WKB) consortium is currently implementing a robust anti-pollution advocacy project to monitor water, air and noise pollution in Dhaka city, the project titled “Promoting democratic governance and collective advocacy for environmental protection in Dhaka city” under Promoting Advocacy and Rights (PAR) Activity. WKB Consortium is implementing this porject in collaboration with USAID and Counterpart International. The project planned to organize nine river talkies as part of advocacy activity. As per the plan Waterkeepers Bangladesh consortium organized the seventh River Talkie as part of the Anti-pollution advocacy process at Bosila by the riverside of Buriganga on 25 July 2022. The topic of the seventh River Talkie was “Health Impacts of River Pollution”. This was a talk show program, which was organized to aware the community people on river pollution and broadcasted live. The show is expected to bring river pollution into the main stream policy discussion involving various sectors and professions. The talk will help adding values to the overall advocacy campaign. The show was broadcasted live on 25th July from 12.00 – 1.00 pm from the Buriganga siverside, Bosila. The show was broadcasted live on WKB Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/waterkeepers…) and Nodi Tv’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/noditvbd/). A total of 43 participated (women 5, men 38) in the river talkie. The participant profile covered health practitioner, CSO and CBO leaders, accademics, activist, community members and media. The show was covered by print media. A total of seven print media published news about the show. The river talkie show was anchored by the WKB consortium lead Sharif Jamil where there was Guest speakers namely Dr. Abu Muhammad Zakir Hussain, Former Regional Advisor, Environmental Health & Climate Change, South-East Asian Regional Office of WHO; Professor Hasnat M Alamgir, Chairman, Department of Public Health, American International University Bangladesh; Ms. Mandira Guha Neogi, Project Manager- Policy & Food Systems at Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN); and Shahinoor Akter, Service Promoter, Satellite Clinic, Nari Moitri. Mr. Mainuddin Ahmed, Chief of Party, PAR, Counterpart International also participated in the discussion. At the beginning the anchor of the talkie, WKB Consortium lead Sharif Jamil welcomed all and introduced the resource persons. After that he briefed about the concept of the river talkie and project. He also shared the objectives of the talkie and then started discussion by sharing few important issues of water pollution and its impact on public health. In the main discussion Dr. Abu Muhammad Zakir Hussain shared about the health problems due to use of polluted water and how the children are being affected. Professor Hasnat M Alamgir emphasized on research on river pollution and health impacts. Ms. Mandira Guha Neogi shared about the nutrition issue related to the clean water while Shahinoor Akter shared her personal experiences of how livelihoods of fishermen and boatmen are affected by the river pollution of Buriganga. At the end of the show, Sharif Jamil summed up with the important comments that community people need to be aware and motivated to come forward in protecting the rivers. Buriganga must be saved to save the Dhaka, he said.
