River water levels are rising again in Sherpur, Chellakhali water level is above the danger level

Due to continuous rain and hilly terrain, the water level of various rivers in Sherpur has started rising again. As a result, the water level of four rivers in the district is close to the danger level. Among them, the water level of the Chellakhali River is flowing 125 centimeters above the danger level. As the water level rises, the locals are fearing floods.

According to Sherpur Water Development Board (PWDB), the water level of the Chellakhali River was flowing 125 centimeters above the danger level at 12 noon on Friday. In addition, the water level of the Old Brahmaputra River in Bhogai and Sherpur is close to the danger level. The water level of the Maharashi and Someshwari rivers in Jhenaigati has started rising since last night.

Sources say that rainfall has increased in Tura district of Meghalaya state of India since last Wednesday night. As a result, the water level in the Chellakhali, Bhogai, Maharashi and Someshwari rivers in the district has started rising due to the inflow from Meghalaya.

Akhinuzzaman, executive engineer of the PAUBO Sherpur office, told Prothom Alo that the water level of four rivers in the district is rising. Among them, the water level of the Chellakhali River is flowing 125 centimeters above the danger level. There is no danger of damage to the river protection dams due to landslides in Jhenaigati and Nalitabari upazilas. If there is no rain today and tomorrow, the water level of the river is likely to decrease.

Akkas Ali (50), a resident of Sannyasivita village on the banks of the Chellakhali River in Nalitabari Upazila, said, “The water in the Thaikya River started flowing in torrents on Thursday night. We are afraid of flooding. If the rain does not stop and the water level rises further, we will be in danger.”

Achmat Ara (38), a housewife from Dighirpar area of ​​Jhenaigati, said, “A few days ago, God saved us from the flood. Now, as it rains again and the water level in the Maharshi River rises, I know there will be a flood.”Read more

Baghber Union Parishad Acting Chairman Nur-e Alam told Prothom Alo that the water level in the Chellakhali River has started rising since Thursday night. If the high water and rain continue, there is a risk of flooding.

Jhenaigati Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Ashraful Alam told Prothom Alo that the water level of the Maharashi and Someshwari rivers is increasing due to continuous rain and hill floods. If the rain continues and the flood water increases, there is a risk of flooding. However, they are ready to deal with the situation.
