River water levels rising in Sylhet, still below danger level

Heavy rains in Sylhet for several days and torrential rains from upstream India have caused the water levels in rivers to rise. However, the water level in any river has not crossed the danger mark yet. Officials of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) believe that the flood situation may worsen if the rains and torrential rains continue.

Deepak Ranjan Das, executive engineer of Paubo Sylhet, told Prothom Alo that the water level in the rivers of Sylhet has been continuously rising for the past few days. The main reason for the rise in water is the hilly terrain coming from India. The situation will return to normal when the rains in India decrease. Apart from this, the continuous heavy rains in Sylhet are also one of the reasons for the rise in water level.

According to Paubo, as of 9:30 am today, the water level in Sylhet’s two main rivers, Surma and Kushiyara, along with other rivers, has not crossed the danger level. However, the water level is rising.

Meanwhile, water has entered some low-lying areas of Gowainghat, Companiganj, Kanaighat, and Jaintapur upazilas in Sylhet. The water level in the rivers of the upazila has increased. The tourist center of Gowainghat upazila, Jaflong Zero Point area, has been flooded. Similarly, the water level in Sadapathar, a tourist center in Companiganj, has also increased much more than normal.Read more

Gowainghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ratan Kumar Adhikari said around 9 am that no village in his upazila has been flooded yet. However, the water in the rivers is rising. Water has also entered the haor. Therefore, the local administration has made all kinds of preparations in anticipation of an impending flood situation.

The district administration said that despite the rise in water levels, no one was reported to be trapped in the water. The local administration is monitoring the situation. The public has also been asked to remain alert.

When contacted around 9:30 am today, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad told Prothom Alo that there is no flood situation in Sylhet. The water level of any river has not crossed the danger level. However, the local administration has made preparations up to the union level. If the situation deteriorates, concerned persons including volunteers, government officials and others are ready to take all kinds of immediate initiatives.
