Sundarbans submerges as Mongla, Pashur rivers exceed danger level

Sundarbans, a world heritage mangrove forest, has submerged as the water levels of the Mongla and Pashur rivers in Bagerhat are flowing above the danger mark.

Since Friday morning, the coast has been inundated by a tidal surge four feet above the danger level.

Kumar Swastik, sub-divisional engineer of Bagerhat District Water Development Board, said: “The water level in the Mongla and Pashur rivers has increased due to the full moon, heavy rains and rough sea. These two rivers’ water flows four feet above the danger level. The low-lying areas of the coast of Mongla are being flooded.”

Selim Akon, a resident of the ferry port area in the municipal town, said: “The water pressure has been very high for the last two to three days. The ferry port has submerged.”

Lutfor Howladar, a resident of Joymonirghol in the upazila, said: “The roads are overflowing, and water from the Pashur River has flooded homes and shrimp farms.”

Sundarbans submerges

The rise in river water levels has submerged the Sundarbans.

However, the forest department is not worried about wildlife loss, as elevated mud banks within the forest provide refuge for the animals.

Sundarban East Forest Division Chandpai Range Karamjal Tourism and Wildlife Breeding Centre officer Azad Kabir said: “Water levels inside the Sundarbans have been rising for the past three days. The forest, including the roads and paths at the Karamjal tourist centre, has submerged, but there has been no visible damage to the wildlife in the forest or Karamjal.”

He further noted that because the forest has high hills, the animals can find shelter there, so there is not much concern about wildlife loss.
