Waterkeepers Bangladesh Hosts Climate Justice Discussion in Pekua: Focusing on Salt Farmers, Betel Leaf Farmers, and Fishermen

On November 19, 2024, Tuesday, a discussion meeting on “Climate Justice and Addressing the Life and Livelihood Crisis of Salt Farmers, Betel leaf Farmers, and Fishermen in Pekua” was held at the Alhaj Kabir Ahmad Chowdhury Field in Pekua, Cox’s Bazar District. The event was organized by the citizens’ group “ধরিত্রী রক্ষায় আমরা-ধরা Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra-DHORA“, Waterkeepers Bangladesh, and Save Nature Save Life Foundation. The session was chaired by former Headmaster of Pekua Model JMC High School, M. Shahjahan Chowdhury. The main speech was delivered by Mamun Kabir, the Publicity Coordinator of DHORA.

The welcoming speech was delivered by Mohammad Delowar Hossain Pekua, an environmental organizer and journalist from Pekua. The meeting was attended by representatives from local civil society, educators, journalists, and environmental workers. During the discussion, representatives of salt farmers, Betel leaf farmers, and fishermen shared their challenges and way forward to resolve the professional issues and crises caused by climate change.
