Three Sylhet City Corporation employees were found dumping garbage in Surma, suspended after the video went viral

Three Sylhet City Corporation employees have been suspended for allegedly dumping plastic and other garbage into the Surma River in a van. The action was taken after a video of the incident went viral on social media on Sunday.

Sylhet City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Rezai Rafin Sarkar confirmed the matter to Prothom Alo yesterday evening.

Earlier yesterday afternoon, Kashmir Reza, president of the Environment and Haor Development Organization, posted a video of garbage being dumped in the Surma River in the Kinbridge area of Sylhet city on Facebook. The video then went viral on social media.

The video footage shows a van parked in the Kinbridge area of the Surma River flowing inside Sylhet city and dumping polythene and other waste into the river. Two people were dumping the waste from the van marked ‘Sylhet City Corporation’. They were wearing the clothes of the City Corporation. Another person was standing nearby.

The Chief Executive Officer of Sylhet City Corporation has demanded that the three be identified. He said, the City Corporation authorities have always discouraged the public from polluting the Surma River and throwing garbage in it. It is unacceptable for any employee of the City Corporation to be involved in this. Therefore, the three have been identified immediately and suspended. The matter will be investigated seriously. It will be investigated whether anyone else is involved besides them.
