Due to torrential rains and torrential rains coming down from the hilly areas of India across the border, the water level of Sylhet’s two main rivers, Surma and Kushiyara, is flowing above the danger level at four points. However, the water level of some rivers in the district has decreased slightly.
The Sylhet Water Development Board (PWDB) said that the water level was above the danger level at Kanaighat point on the Surma River and Amalshid, Sheola and Fenchuganj points on the Kushiyara River as of 6 am on Monday.
At Kanaighat point, the Surma water is flowing at a height of 13.54 meters, which is 0.79 meters above the danger level. At Amalshid point in Kushiyara, the water is 17.16 meters, which is 1.76 meters above the danger level. At Sheola point, the water is 13.50 meters, which is 0.45 meters above the danger level, and at Fenchuganj, it is 9.68 meters, which is 0.23 meters above the danger level.
Apart from Surma and Kushiyara, the water level of the Dhalai River in the district has increased. However, the water level of the Lova, Sari, Dauki and Sari-Goain rivers has decreased slightly.
Local residents said that water is rising in the low-lying areas of Gowainghat, Companiganj, Fenchuganj and Kanaighat upazilas. If the rain continues, the situation in these areas is unlikely to improve. In addition, water has also entered the low-lying areas of Jaintapur, Osmaninagar and Zakiganj upazilas.
According to the Sylhet Meteorological Department, it rained in Sylhet on Monday morning. There is a risk of heavy rainfall in some places today. There is also a risk of landslides in the hilly areas due to the heavy rain.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad told Prothom Alo, “We are constantly monitoring the water levels in the rivers. All kinds of advance preparations have been made to deal with the situation.”
