Due to heavy rains, the water of five rivers in Sylhet and Chittagong in the northeast of the country is flowing above the danger level. The water of the northern river Teesta is flowing at the warning level. It may come close to the danger level. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center says that the water of the Brahmaputra is rising and the water flow of the Jamuna is stable. In this situation, the Water Development Board has warned of the risk of flooding in areas near the rivers of six districts of the country. These six districts are Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Netrokona and Feni.
Sardar Uday Raihan, executive engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center, told Prothom Alo on Sunday that water is flowing above the danger level at seven points in Surma, Kushiyara, Manu, Khowai and Haldar in Chittagong. This situation is likely to continue for the next 24 hours.
According to sources from the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center, the water level of the Sarigowain, Jadukata, Manu, Dhalai, Khowai and Someshwari rivers in Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions may rise in the next three days.
The water level of Gomti, Muhuri, Feni, Halda, Sangu, Matamuhuri rivers of Chittagong division may increase in the next 24 hours. During this time, the water level of Muhuri river may remain close to the danger level and the Matamuhuri river may flow within the warning level. There is a risk of flood situation in the low-lying areas adjacent to Muhuri river in Feni district. However, the water level of these rivers may start to decrease in the next three days.
According to the Water Development Board, the water level of Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in Rangpur division may increase in the next three days. Teesta river may flow within the warning limit.
Tides may be higher than normal in coastal rivers of Barisal, Khulna and Chittagong divisions until tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the forecast given by the Meteorological Department has said that there may be rain in many places in Mymensingh, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions tomorrow, Monday. Heavy rainfall started last Thursday due to a deep depression in the sea. This rain is happening all over the country. Although the depression has passed later, now it is raining mainly due to the activity of the monsoon, meteorologists say.
